A Tribute to Kenny Kirkland (1955–1998)
This performance is a heartfelt tribute to the late pianist Kenny Kirkland, a remarkable force in the world of jazz and fusion. Renowned for his incredible versatility and innovation, Kirkland’s music ranged from complex, rhythmic comping to soulful and intricate improvisations. His performances with luminaries such as Branford Marsalis and Sting exemplified his ability to blend genres effortlessly, fusing jazz, rock, and classical elements into a sound uniquely his own. Kirkland’s profound sense of rhythm, harmony, and emotional depth made his piano playing not only technically brilliant, but also deeply expressive.
Jeff “Tain” Watts and Kirkland shared a rich musical collaboration that extended through several key projects, both live and in the studio. When Nat Reeves joined Kirkland and Watts in Kenny Garrett’s band, he added his distinctive, solid bass playing to the already dynamic musical collaboration. Together, they created a powerful rhythm section that drove Garrett’s energetic and innovative performances. Benito Gonzalez was deeply influenced by Kirkland’s playing. Like Kirkland, Gonzalez incorporates Latin jazz rhythms, intense harmonic progressions, and a sense of fluid improvisation into his performances.
On September 28, Kirkland would have turned 69. Tonight, we honor his legacy and the indelible mark he left on the world of music, celebrating his genius and the lasting inspiration he provides to musicians everywhere. The set list features original compositions by Kirkland, along with other tracks he valued and recorded — each infused with his distinctive voice and style.
